2008 IOM WA State Championship
Monday, 29 September 2008

21 skippers entered the 2008 WA State Championships, on a long weekend when the AFL Grand Final and Royal Show competed for people’s time. The venue for the 2009 National Championships was put to the test.

Saturday dawned overcast, with a light to moderate North to North-West wind on the lake. Race Officer Bob Paton spent the first part of the morning having to chase the wind round to set a course. Fortunately, the wind gradually settled into the west, and racing started to move along nicely.

The lake allowed for quite long courses to be set. There weren’t lots of races sailed, but if you didn’t get a fantastic start, there was always the possibility of working your way through the fleet.

Early in the regatta, Hub Bell was taking the racing by the scruff of the neck. A couple of unfortunate incidents dragged him back into the pack, and consistent sailing from Glenn Dawson and Roger Paul allowed them to close the gap.

Huge turnout at South Perth
Sunday, 31 August 2008

Although the weather was a bit cool there was wind and an amazing 27 boats turned out for the 8th handicap series at South Perth this weekend.

Nigel Masterton stayed ahead of his handicap finishing the day just over 1 point ahead of Lloyd Coles with club stalwart Hub Bell finishing third a further 4 and a bit points behind.

With this many boats on such a small course there were a number of minor incidents and it was great to see that most sailors had an enjoyable day even if the did have to go around some of the marks in a ten deep pack - at times you could only but laugh!

The shifty and gusty conditions also made it difficult at times. One minute it was light and then the next the breeze was back at times gusting quite strong and at one time the majority of the fleet were either laying flat on their sides or 'heading down the mine' with their bows buried deep as they nose dived!

Results for yesterday's racing are now available in the results section for viewing along with the progressive series results.

Next weekend it's back to Jackadder for IOM scratch racing!

WA Ten Rater State Championship
Sunday, 17 August 2008

Current Ten Rater Australian Champion Gary Cotterell has continued his winning run adding another state championship title to his long list of titles, winning the 2008 WA Ten Rater State Championship sailed at the venue of the 2009 ARYA Australian Championships, Champion Lakes.

Gary won convincingly finishing with ten wins and four second places of the 16 race series with nett 18 points ahead of Graeme Howie on 36 points with Bob Paton third on 46.7 points.

Ten boats competed in the event with the conditions light and variable and the wind predominantly from the NNW ranging from 0 – 8 knots with shifts of 40-60 degrees at times, making the task of setting the course for Race Officer Roger Paul extremely difficult. Roger answered the challenge providing the competitors with excellent racing using both of the course areas available at Champion Lakes.

Champion Lakes, the venue of the 2009 Australian Championships continues to prove itself as an excellent venue for radio sailing with a fantastic sailing area and while the off water facilities are still under construction they are in an advanced stage and will be completed well ahead of the championships.

Full results are available in our results section.
